Volkswagen To Announce WRC Entry In May?

Volkswagen Race Touareg 3

After waffling for a year on a possible Formula 1 bid, NASCAR entry, or Le Mans prototype competition, a report out today says the Volkswagen Group may finally be putting its go-fast eggs in the World Rally Championship basket.

According to the report, it could get done with the Volkswagen brand, too. Audi might seem like a more natural choice based on its history, but Volkswagen is already estabished in the extreme rally sector, with its Race Touareg (pictured) banging it out in some of the harshest environments in the world. Rally might seem a bit normal in comparison.

At the moment, however, VW is not releasing any details. The word is that it had planned to make its WRC announcement in Portugal in March, but incomplete paperwork inside headquarters put the kibosh on it. Instead, the Rally d'Italia is pegged as the new venue.

We'll keep our ears to the ground for more as the event draws nearer.
