While we wait for the New York Auto Show, we turn our attention over to South Korea, where the Seoul Motor Show will get underway next week. Renault's South Korean arm Samsung will be unveiling a new concept that previews its next-generation SM7 large sedan. The company released a teaser picture of the concept this week.
The SM7 concept shows a marked departure from the current model. Starting up front, the headlights are narrowed out, the grille loses its curvy, smiley orientation for a larger, trapezoidal shape, and the hood and bumper are redesigned.
The overall shape is more slung-back and sporty, giving the car more of a four-door coupe feel. The low roof and prominent beltline add to the sporty appearance. The roofline appears like it could lean all the way back into the rear fascia, in the form of a hatch, but since the sketch fades out around that point, it's impossible to tell.
The current SM7 shares a platform with the sixth-generation North American
Nissan Maxima and the Asian-market Nissan Teana. It's been in production since 2004.
Outside of the teaser picture, little is known about the concept. The production version is expected to debut later this year, hitting the market next year. It will make the move from a Nissan to a Renault platform, sitting on a longer version of the Renault Latitude's platform. We'll see more of this one when the Seoul show gets underway next Friday.
