Given the company is 125 years old, you’d think it’d run out of “firsts” by now. But here we are with yet another one for the venerable brand. At the Geneva Motor Show, Mercedes-Benz introduced the C-Class coupe, marking the first time in the company’s history three coupes will be offered simultaneously in its lineup.
Joining the CL-Class and E-Class coupes, the C-Class coupe will be offered with a choice of two engines at launch. The C250 will feature a 201-horsepower, 1.8-liter turbocharged inline four-cylinder producing 229 ft-lbs of torque. The C350 will house a 3.5-liter, 302-horsepower V-6, producing 273 ft-lbs of torque. Both engines feature direct injection and their power is conducted to the rear wheels via a seven-speed automatic transmission.
Wouldn’t be a new Benz without some sort of new technology designated in all caps, and for the C-Class coupes it’s the AGILITY CONTROL suspension, essentially optimizing the suspension system’s response to road speed and condition. It firms up automatically when cornering, while softening in steady state conditions, to provide both a smooth ride and capable handling.
While not exactly a pillarless coupe in traditional Mercedes-Benz style, the C-Class coupe gives the illusion of being one by blacking out the B-pillar. The overall styling resembles that of the current C-Class sedan while adding a flair of sportiness all its own. The combination of a short front overhang, long hood and short rear deck gives the car elegant proportions while implying power and agility.
The gracefully designed interior features a variety of shapes and surfacing, sure to delight the eye. The telematics suite includes wireless Bluetooth audio streaming and a USB interface in the center armrest. Other conveniences include SIRIUS weather information, special destination search via Google, and the option of configuring and downloading a Google Maps route to the car from your PC. The navigation system even keeps track of where the car has been and can recall it. (Not so sure we like that one…)
Scheduled to go on sale in the U.S. in September, pricing, as well as the potential for a BMW M3-killing AMG model have yet to be announced.
