Chicago Auto Show, February 9, 2011: Midwest Automotive Media Association announced its Family Vehicle of the Year winner--the 2011 Hyundai Sonata.
MAMA is nonprofit organization comprised of automotive journalists and public relations professionals. The author of this piece is a member and Family Vehicle juror.
Qualifying vehicles had four doors and cost less than $50,000. They were either new or significantly upgraded for 2010. Another significant factor: whether the machine was available for evaluation at one of the association's two annual rallies.
Contenders: minivans, compact sedans, mid-size sedans, a diesel hatchback, small crossover and mid-size SUV. Of them, the Sonata was the clear winner, with the 2011 Honda Odyssey and 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee runners-up.
