Jaguar X-Type
The latest news comes from a discussion of the issue with Jaguar's global brand director, Adrian Hallmark. Hallmark says Jaguar needs more models, aimed at lower price points. The answer? A mid-size sedan aimed at the likes of the BMW 3-Series, Mercedes C-Class, and Audi A4/A5.
The reason is obvious: sales volume. The XF, XK, and XJ are all excellent entries in their respective segments, but they're toward the upper end of the buying spectrum, particularly in the U.S. Having a model that stickers closer to the $30,000 mark would boost sales potential and profitability for the company and dealers alike.
Jaguar's last mid-size sedan,
the X-Type, ended sales in 2008
, and hasn't yet been replaced. The new model could come in as many as three body styles, according to Hallmark, potentially meaning a coupe, sedan, and wagon. We Americans would likely only see the coupe and sedan, as wagons have largely been displaced by crossovers.
Jaguar reportedly
has a crossover brewing as well, however, based on the Range Rover Evoque. That vehicle, previewed by MotorAuthority last year, could well serve to boost Jaguar's sales as well, though it remains to be seen how it could be positioned to avoid cannibalizing sales of its sister brand.
The last reports on an X-Type replacement put the timeline at 2012 at the earliest, but according to Hallmark, Jaguar is still at the nascent stages of the car's development--it will be at least four years before a new mid-size Jag hits the road.
We'll keep you posted.
