2011 Volvo V60 R-Design

Volvo has in recent years streamlined its wagon offerings in the U.S., having dropped the V70 wagon and replacing it with a front-wheel drive version of the formerly all-wheel drive only XC70. And, sadly, this strategy has also come at the cost of the stylish V60.

While the S60 sedan is gaining rave reviews here in the U.S. for its compliant ride, luxurious look and feel and reasonable pricetag, its V60 wagon sibling has been ruled out for local sale.

All hope is not lost, however. Speaking with Volvo’s U.S. chief Stefan Jacoby recently, the guys at SwedeSpeed were able to gather a few insights on the automaker’s reasoning for excluding the V60. Jacoby described the V60 as being an “enthusiast’s vehicle” and hinted that it may eventually come but to do so would need to fill some niche, like being a hybrid perhaps.

The story doesn’t end there as a second source from Sweden also hinted that a hybrid version of the V60 had been approved for production.

The V60 could offer Volvo with a unique bodystyle for its first hybrid model here in the U.S., a strategy that has helped hybrid vehicles like the Toyota Prius and Honda Insight gain notoriety. Volvo is expected to launch a new plug-in hybrid vehicle next year and the V60 wagon could very well be the platform it chooses to launch its green technology.

Stay tuned for an update.
