Texan Gets New Ferrari For $15,000 In Auction

Texas' MyPlates license plates auction

Texas' MyPlates license plates auction

Thursday night at Cowboys Stadium, the first ever Texas license plate auction returned some rather interesting results. Thirty-three license plates were sold for $138,650. Purchasing the plates at auction gives the high bidder the right to use the plate for 25 years with an option to renew it every ten years after that. A unique feature of these plates is they can be legally sold to someone else, so winners can potentially resell their plate, presumably at a profit. Other Texas plates cannot be resold.

My Plates, the specialty license plate vendor for the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles, held the auction. The company’s goal is to maximize revenues for the state through the sale of personalized specialty plates. Working with the state since November 2009, over $2.6 million has found its way into the state’s general revenue fund.

While 32 of the 33 plates sold at auction were predetermined, one plate was buyer’s choice. That plate featured seven question marks the winning bidder could fill in on their own. FERRARI set the record as the most expensive plate ever sold in Texas at $15,000. COWBOYS came in second (perhaps proving Texans love sports cars more than football) at $11,500. PORSCHE brought $7,500, MUSTANG brought $7000, 2FAST4U brought $3,000, NASCAR brought $2500 and the bidder’s choice plate went for $6,000.
