Lovers of Italian flair--on a budget--were treated with a handful of 2012 Fiat 500 minicars at this week’s 2011 Detroit Auto Show, which added a little spark to Chrysler’s stands and managed to draw in plenty of fans and curious onlookers.

These latest live photos really show off the classic styling of the new 500, a design that should ensure drivers and owners will be passionate about this little ride. But beyond the passion, there are also thoroughly rational reasons to own such a car: downsizing, practicality, and economics.

  1. sorry, but i think this will fail miserably. too small, unsafe, ugly and FIAT. maybe single women will buy them for the cuteness factor. fix it again tony.

    Bad stuff?

  2. It may fail for many reasons but one thing is certain: 500 is at the top of some of the most reliable cars in Europe - way higher than MINI or VW.

  3. The 500 has modest sales goals and will meet them comfortably thanks in part to the Chrysler dealer network that has been carefully selected for demographic continuity. By every measure the 500 has been acknowledged as an excellent vehicle in Europe, and this improved "American" version should be not only be a sales success, but will create a "cult" following of sorts in all forms of gadgets and accessiories. It will be hip to drive a 500.
Only a few Alfas will join the Fiat 500 as to not over stretch the market and so that Chrysler can adopt the Fiat/Alfa/Lancia based platforms into completely re-designed and styled true American Chrysler products. These will count as Fiats for Fiat purposes, but will be completely "Americanized".
In the same way that a Chrysler 300 manufactuered here in Chrysler factories and sold in most of Europe as a Lancia will profit Chrysler, Fiat will offset costs by providing platforms that few, if any, will detect as not being totally domestic in style and feel. These will NOT be rebadged, but completely new offerings built here for North American markets.
The 500 starts the ball rolling and it will not only sell well but create a following.
The 2011 Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep lineup is causing a commotion of buzz it's so ground breaking and the Fiat brand will only build on that excitement.

  4. The new 500 will do very well. Marchionne has take MAJOR steps to fix Fiat's quality issues, just as he is doing at Chrysler (hired some 2000 quality engineers following his arrival). Recent JD Power surveys in France showed the 500 is the highest quality of all the "A Class" cars sold in France. The 500 is big enough to be used as a real car (unlike the Smart car) and small enough to be very cute, fun to drive, and economical.
When the Abarth arrives, I'm first in line!

  5. This is a great safe, fun, economical and stylish car! I can't wait to buy one when the dealers open up! I've driven this in Europe. I hope the American auto press will look before writing based on 30 year old ideas.
