The release of a new Porsche is like New Years Eve, as one gets all excited before it occurs, only to realize not much has changed. This time around, Porsche is unveiling a machine that’s a little more special. The German automaker is planning on unveiling something “spectacular” at the Detroit Auto Show and reports are indicating that it will be a new 918 Coupe.
According to the German site AutoBild, Porsche will show the new 918 Coupe at the Detroit show and it’s likely that it will share the same generic style and shape as the 918 Spyder, but with a fixed roof for added aerodynamics and stability.
Porsche is describing the coupe version of the 918 as a track-only racecar, while the Spyder will be the street version. That being said, we wouldn’t rule out the possibility of the coupe ending up in showrooms as well.
Unlike the environmentally friendly 918 Roadster, the coupe will ditch the gas-electric motor in favor of a V-8 with 600 horsepower. That output will put the 918 Coupe on the same playing field as the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3.
Like the Porsche Carrera GT, the 918 Coupe will be at the top of the Porsche pile and will have the price tag to prove it.
