Nissan showed its new Sunny sedan at the Guangzhou Auto Show in China on December 20th. Although the Chinese get the first crack at this new
model, Nissan says that soon citizens of
170 countries will be able to buy this car under various
names. The Chinese Sunny packs a
1.5-liter 4-cylinder engine and continuously variable transmission which Nissan promises will deliver
best-in-class fuel
economy. Although Nissan didn't reveal dimensions for the
Sunny, they call it “medium sized” in a press
release. But it's worth nothing that the Sunny seems to share many dashboard pieces with the subcompact Nissan Micra.
There's not much clarity on what role the Sunny will play in Nissan showrooms outside of China. However, it seems like an obvious replacement for the Tiida/Versa, a car which is also sold practically everywhere Nissan does business and straddles the subcompact/compact market with an interior that boasts almost mid-sized space. With a design going back to 2004, the Tiida is overdue for a replacement. Hopefully, the new Sunny sheds some light on this most critical piece of Nissan's global lineup.
