The 6.2-liter V-8 that currently lives under the hood of the Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG is a sublime piece of engineering and could very well be the best the C-Class line has ever seen, but it today’s world, its thirst just won’t do. That’s why the refreshed C-Class – expected to bow at next month’s Detroit Motor Show – might have something new living under the hood.
Inside Line is reporting that the new C63 Black Series coupe – to be released late next year – will get a 5.5-liter twin-turbocharged V-8, which currently puts out 571 horsepower and 664 pound-feet of torque between 2,250 and 5,500 rpm in the S63 luxury missile. That’s 71 more ponies than the CLK AMG Black Series and enough torque to start a dead planet.
That motor will likely be connected to AMG's seven-speed Speedshift automatic transmission, with power running to the rear wheels.
Those massive numbers should help ease the pain of the car’s $100,000-plus price tag. Still, can you really put a price on wiping the smile off the face of a BMW M3 driver by smoking them at the light? We think not.
