Lotus, in order to justify its new pricing, will produce its own V-8 engine design for the upcoming Esprit.
According to a report in Autocar, the company’s head, Dany Bahar, stated that they are looking at the possibility of an all-new Hethel-engineered V-8 in the Esprit and a V-6 for the new Elan.
This wouldn’t be the first time that the company built its own engine, as it produced a V-8 for the Esprit between 1996 and 2004, along with three engines for other manufacturers.
So, with Lotus developing a couple of its own engines, what will become of the company’s Toyota-sourced powerplants?
“In the minds of sports-car enthusiasts, Toyota power might not be good enough," admitted Bahar to the English magazine.
Engine development can be costly, but it could save the company money in the long run due to future cost savings that will come with parts sharing.
“The decision then will be purely financial,” said Bahar.
