We reported last week that Porsche has been given the lead role in the development of sports cars and large luxury sedans within the Volkswagen Group and now, Audi has been assigned its role.
Audi, who were hoping to get Porsche’s role, are now responsible for developing large SUVs for the VW Group. So, while they didn’t get the role they had hoped for, Audi wasn’t completely shortchanged.
The automaker will lead the development of the new Porsche Cayenne and the smaller Cajun. Currently, the Cayenne is developed entirely by Porsche.
On top of that, Audi will also be responsible for the new Volkswagen Touareg and the Audi Q7.
"This is not badge engineering. Porsche will be responsible for the engines and performance of the next Cayenne. It will drive like a Porsche and perform like a Porsche," said a Porsche spokesperson to Automotive News Europe.
We’ll just have to wait and see if that statement proves to be true.
