In the past several years Porsche has been venturing into new territory. While doing so, it has undergone somewhat of a personality change. First, it softened up its image a bit with the introduction of the ultimate soccer mom vehicle, the Cayenne SUV. Then, it showed its classier side with the four-door Panamera. Now, the company has decided to bring on a new addition to the family. It comes in the form of a baby SUV with the code name, Cajun.
Porsche is saying all of the right things when it comes to their newest project. A few adjectives have been thrown around to describe the car, including "light weight, agility and handling". Also, the boys in Stuttgart plan to take a page out of Audi's playbook, as the mini-ute will be "loosely based" off of the Audi Q5.
What I find to be most interesting is who the company is saying this vehicle is for. The company says that the Cajun will attract "younger customers" to the brand and will be priced as an entry-level vehicle. I wonder how this will sit with those who once saw Porsches as an exclusive commodity, that you purchased after your hard work had paid off.
The Cajun is not for everyone. Along with a terrible name, its entry-level price can allow some very lucky teenagers to enjoy it as their first car. Although, I believe this car represents a business model that has allowed Porsche to survive in recent years. The company can no longer rely on vehicles with limited use such as the Boxster or 911. Also, there are very few customers in this recession looking to purchase the ridiculous GT2. In today's market, consumers are looking for the most functionality and fun for the best price. Porsche's newest trait, practicality, may be what allows the company to continue on.
