Not to be outdone by rivals Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz, Porsche has announced it too, will be delivering a compact SUV to market.

Named Cajun, the vehicle will be based on the platform that underpins Audi’s Q5 and VW’s Tiguan. Expected to come to market in the 2014 model year, it is expected that both V-6 and V-8 engines will power the Q5/X3/GLK competitor.

In an official statement, Porsche said its supervisory board has instructed its board of management to pursue the Cajun project to develop an "efficient and sporty model" that will "have a very positive impact with its typical Porsche features such as light weight, ease of handling and agility".

Further, the Cajun is expected to do for Porsche’s SUV lineup what the Boxster did for the company's sports car line. The statement continued: "As an attractive entry model in the Porsche world, the 'Cajun' will attract new and even younger customers to the brand along with the Boxster."

Production is too far out to speculate on pricing, although given the slot Cajun will occupy, and the market Porsche is trying to reach with the vehicle, the mid-$50,000 range is probably a good guess for the base model.
