Long known for turning Mercedes-Benz’s bahn-burners into even more incendiary devices, when it comes to the three-pointed star’s latest halo car, the surprise associated with the emergence of a Brabus tuner version of the SLS AMG is not so much that it exists, but rather that it took so long.

Focused more on improving handling and aerodynamics than the performance of the engine, the Brabus Widestar SLS AMG’s numerous modifications include a wide body kit, lighter wheels, a lower ride height, stiffer sway bars, a new exhaust system, and a custom interior package.

Universally hailed as an exceptional performance car—MBZ’s SLS AMG claims a 3.7-second 0-60 mph time, and a 197 mph top speed—the styling of the gull-winged coupe is best described as polarizing. Some people love the homage to the legendary 300 SL of the 1950s, while others decry it as derivative—but not quite derivative enough. The Brabus Widestar kit amplifies the look of the car with fender flares, blacked-out chrome detailing, a wider rear track and a reconfigured look for the exhaust tips.

The wheels are the ultra-light Brabus Monoblock and can be specified in the color of the buyer’s choice. Sized 9.5 x 20 inches up front and 11 x 21 inches for the rear, they add considerable muscularity to the look of the SLS. Brabus is offering a choice of Pirelli or Yokohama tires in 275/30ZR-20 and 295/25ZR-21 sizes.

To frame the new tires and wheels Brabus has used a wind tunnel to develop a carbon fiber body kit. The kit both improves aerodynamics and enhances the appearance of the car. The front and rear fenders feature drag reducing air outlets and the front fascia reduces lift. These features, working in concert with the rear spoiler and diffuser, are said to further improve both the look and aerodynamic balance of the car.

The height-adjustable suspension system was developed in conjunction with Bilstein and poses the SLS 1.2 inches lower over its tires and wheels than stock—lending an even more aggressive countenance to the assemblage. The integrated ride control system enables the suspension to tighten for high performance driving, or soften for general touring, adding an additional element of comfort to the car.

With all of the modifications, an eye toward paring weight was vigilantly maintained. The new exhaust system is a perfect example. Made of titanium, it is 26 pounds lighter than the production car’s. Additionally, it permits freer breathing, enabling the hand-built 6.3-liter V-8 to deliver 573 horsepower, up 10 hp over the production car.

To enhance the interior, Brabus is offering a broad array of designs in both leather and Alcantara, as well as a custom steering wheel and carbon fiber trim to enable the customer to create an environment for their SLS Widestar that is uniquely their own.

Pricing has yet to be announced.
