2011 Hyundai Equus

Bringing the attack to the biggest of the big boys in the volume luxury car business is a tall task, but not one that balks Hyundai. The 2011 Hyundai Equus sedan, sized and feature-packed to compete heads-up with the likes of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class and BMW 7-Series will be at dealerships in December--but it'll be priced well below the competition.

The 2011 Hyundai Equus Signature starts from $58,000, while the more feature-filled Equus Ultimate kicks off at $64,500. To compare, BMW's 7-Series starts from $82,500 for a competitive V-8 powered 750i, and Mercedes' S550 starts at an even stiffer $91,600. All three are withing spitting distance on power--the Equus brings 361 horsepower to the table, while the 750i turns out 400 horsepower and the S550 sits at 382 horsepower. And that's before the 429-horsepower 5.0-liter Tau V-8 enters the picture next year.

The Equus Signature's bargain price includes features like electronically controlled air suspension with continuous damping control (CDC), 19-inch alloy wheels, nine airbags, active head restraints and seatbelts, lane departure warning, smart cruise control, adaptive front lighting, parking assist system, driver's seat massage, heated and cooled front seats, an Apple iPad as the owner's manual and so much more we've put the full list on the second page.

The Equus Ultimate adds to the Signature's already full feature set with a forward-view cornering camera, reclining rear seats, "first-class" passenger side rear seat with leg support and massage system, cooled rear seats, rear-seat entertainment system with 8-inch monitor, and a refrigerator in the rear center console.

Catch the full feature sheet on page two, and read up on our previous coverage of the 2011 Equus here.

  1. Wow, that's a great price. When it was announced it'll cost around 70-80K, I had my doubts on how they'll sell but at $58,000 I think this will be just as successful as the Genesis sedan.

  2. The bottom line is this is a Hyundai, a company who has never had their hand in luxury. Surely this car will have tons of flaws because of that reason. Also, since Hyundai has little to no credibility, people will easily fork out the extra money for a Mercedes or BMW. They are know for high quality parts while Hyundai is known for some pretty cheap Sh**.

  3. Nice car - here in Australia $58,000 will buy you a little BMW 320i with 154 hp on tap. However, this car cannot compete with the BMW or Mercedes (or even Lexus) on many levels. A 6-speed transmission in a car costing nearly $60,000 is really unacceptable these days. BMW and Lexus have used 8-speeds for years already. The engine output is also significantly less than both competitors, as well as the LS460. Personally for an extra $7k I would much rather buy the LS460 (or even a used one). The Lexus will have a much better resale value as well. Nice attempt, though, but not for me.

  4. Wow, that's a lot of money from a car company that made absolute crap just a few years ago. Absolute crapola. Rusty, junky, ugly, crappy cars.

  9. I care what brand the car is - it determines the resale value in a lot of cases. I also care where the car is made. As a US consumer I just refuse to buy cars made in Korea and China... at least at this point.

  10. People w/ $60k are probably more interested than the badge than a bargain. They may be able to steal sales w/ a cheaper family sedan (sonata) but good luck making those #s w/ this ...

  11. Yes, Tons of exclusivity.
you won’t just be the first on your block to own one; you’ll likely be the ONLY one.

  12. I'm old enough to remember the same nasty comments made about Toyota, and Honda when they first came to this market. I might point out that JD Powers rated Hyudia on par with the best in the industry for the last couple of years, and they did that in a fraction of the time that the Japanese companies did. Anyone who thinks that Hyudai is just a second rate wannabe, is in serious denial.

  13. resale value?? HA! my co-worker just recently picked up a CL55 for $25k. original sticker price back in 2004?? $119k.
so, let's not discuss resale value shall we? hyundai is onto something great. this only causes other manufacturers to step up their game.
