Google’s mobile OS, Android, has been lacking in the automotive applications department.  Now Google is trying to claw away its share of the automotive mobile application market.  There first foray is updating their Car Home application for the Nexus One and Motorola Droid mobile phones.  Google hopes to offer an overall better driving experience through the phone.

Google’s Car Home application allows users easy access to functions they deem important, like GPS, voice-activated commands, contacts, and whatever the driver deems necessary, as the application is more customizable.

Home launches automatically when placed in its car dock, but can also be started by opening the application directly.  One setting is the ability.  The upgraded customization allows the user to change many aspects of Car Home.  Car Home can be set up to automatically start when paired with a Bluetooth device.   You can also change the wallpaper in Car Home, adding just that much more personalization.

Android developers will also have an easier time making existing applications compatible with Car Mode.  To find out what applications support Car mode, all one has to do is locate those apps in the “Car applications” category.  This makes finding certain applications easier and added as a shortcut.

The new Car Home version is now available for Android 2.2, but is only available for the Nexus One and Motorola Droid.  Simply search “Car Home” in the Android Market to download the application, and enjoy.
