Most Americans who love to drive have, at some point, fantasized about driving the unlimited speeds available on the German national highway system known as the Autobahn. Having done so on several occasions, we can tell you, yes, it is all that.

An excellent way to do the Autobahn is in your own car, taking advantage of European Delivery Programs offered by the major Euro manufacturers offering their wares here in the States. Simply plan a European vacation during which you take delivery of your new Audi, BMW, Mercedes, Porsche, or Volvo, and in many cases you’ll also get a discount price for doing so.

Here, we hasten to add, Porsche doesn’t offer discounts. In fact, Porsche actually charges fees. But hey, if you can afford a GT3, the thrill of piloting it along the Autobahn for miles on end at 150 miles per hour, without looking over your shoulder for Five-O, well that’s worth it, right? On the upside, Audi treats the R8 like the rest of its lineup when it comes to European Delivery. If you’ve been on the fence regarding an R8 vs. a 911, well…

European Deliveries are easy to set up, your local dealer has everything you need to do one and yes, as you might imagine, there are some caveats. In most cases you have to order the car well in advance and after you pick it up in Europe you’ll still be looking at as much as a month (or even two) before it arrives Stateside. Given you have to pay for the car in full before the factory will release it to you, you could well find yourself in the position of making payments on a car you don’t have yet.

Still though, there are many benefits, most manufacturers offer hotel accommodations, driving adventure packages, insurance coverage, factory tours, round trip airfare, and transportation of the vehicle to your local dealer from any one of up to 14 dropoff points around Europe.
