Many automotive companies have jumped on the personal-technology band wagon, as they try to entice younger buyers who feel the need to be connected 24/7 into showrooms and new cars.
Systems like Ford’s Sync and General Motors' revamped OnStar offering are just two in the quickly growing market of automotive infotainment systems.
Now upping the ante is BMW. BMW’s Connected Drive system aims to connect the driver with their car, accessories, and outside life into one package and the new iDrive upgrade is hoping to deliver just that.
BMW’s iDrive system will now offer an Apple user interface directly controllable through the system, which will allow users to control various iPod and iPhone programs and applications directly through the car’s infotainment system and external display. This is all done through the new “iPod Out” feature in the iOS 4.
The program has been in the works for over three years and takes the existing iPod car integration systems, which offered relatively basic controls, and offers more of a complete and seamless system. The “iPod Out” integration system is designed so that users of an iPod will feel comfortable with the system as it was designed to display an Apple-like interface.
BMW plans on offering the new system in models as early as 2011.
