I can’t remember a time when Saab has gotten more attention than it has during the last year. And rightly so - now that the all new 2011 Saab 9-5 has hit the US showrooms, we’re all anxious to know what Spyker, the Dutch supercar manufacturer, has in store for their new brand. Well, you won’t be disappointed as Spyker has released an official statement announcing that they are talking to BMW about using some of the German’s components in their future vehicles.
Although many have speculated that these talks indicated Spyker’s desire was to use the new Mini Countryman’s platform as the basis for a smaller Saab model (tentatively designated the 9-2), the latest reports suggest that the Dutch automaker’s first priority is to source a BMW engine for the new 9-3 due out in 2012. As the Bavarians continue to emphasize their EfficientDynamics technologies, the new engine, rumored to boast around 220-horsepower, would undoubtedly exhibit many of the characteristics that have come to define this new mentality. And given the engine’s decent power output, it’s possible that it could eventually find its way into the bonnet of Saab’s flagship, the 9-5.
By now you may be wondering what a manufacturing powerhouse like BMW could gain from a deal with the just off life-support Saab. And while this is purely speculation, given that Saab is well-renowned for their safety and turbocharged engines, it is reasonable that the Germans could hope to benefit from this expertise, especially as they continue to move towards turbocharged engines themselves.
