It was only yesterday that we brought you news that filming for the final episodes of Top Gear set to star Jeremy Clarkson had been wrapped, and that those episodes were likely to air sometime in the summer. The BBC has now confirmed that it will air a single “special” episode with Clarkson in it, a teaser trailer for which was released this morning.
This will be the last episode featuring Clarkson together with co-hosts Richard Hammond and James May. It will contain two segments shot before Clarkson was fired last March for his altercation with producer Oisin Tymon, with the rest of the episode expected to mostly feature just Hammond and May in the studio. There were previously meant to be three more episodes for the current season 22 of the show.
At present, no date for the airing of the final Clarkson-era episode has been given, though the BBC has previously hinted at a summer release. There’s also been no mention of who will star in the show going forward or whether there’ll even be a show after the current season.
A handful of British celebs have been speculated as new hosts for Top Gear and there’s even been talk of a different host appearing each episode. At the same time, it’s been reported that Hammond and May have been offered seven-figure deals to continue with the show but many believe they’ll stick with Clarkson and turn the offers down.
The famous trio is out of contract at this time and Clarkson isn’t being offered a renewal due to his now-famous fracas. However, the trio have still been appearing in a series of Top Gear Live shows, now referred to as "Clarkson, Hammond, and May Live", and rumors are abound that all three may be moving to Netflix to start a new show called "House of Cars", but no confirmation has been received from any of the parties.
We’ll likely find out what’s in store for Top Gear along with Clarkson, Hammond and May later this year. One thing’s certain, and that’s that Top Gear will never be the same again.
