Have you ever wondered what goes into building a Rolls-Royce Phantom? Well I’ll bet you are now. The $380,000 Rolls, king of the luxury vehicles, is built to exacting specifications, designed to whisk passengers to their destinations in style and comfort. In order to accomplish this, the 19-foot, 5,622-pound Phantom is powered by a 453 horsepower V-12 with 531 pound-feet of torque.
But these aren’t the impressive figures. No--the truly staggering numbers are the ones that tell the story of the Phantom’s creation. Hand assembly takes place at the manufacturer’s Goodwood plant in West Sussex. Indeed, the factory only houses two robots, which are responsible for spraying each of the five coats of paint onto the body. The rest of the work is done by human hands. And that’s a lot of work. Every Phantom is made up of 2,000 welds, 200 custom sections of trim, up to 42 wood panels made of up to 28 layers, and enough leather work that 18 animals had to donate their hides. And to top it all off, every Phantom is polished for five hours - once between every layer of paint.
