Summers in Los Angeles are brutal. And this summer is no exception, as new record highs are being set across the Southland. And, to make matters worse, temperatures are expected to stay in the triple digits throughout the valley and inland areas. Even the cooler areas of the City of Angels, like Beverly Hills, which can be as much as 20 or even 30 degrees cooler, have been approaching nearly triple digit numbers. For car lovers, this all begs the question: Who wants to drive through the sauna known as LA in a convertible? This is not convertible weather. This is “seal the windows, blast the AC, sit naked on a block of ice as you speed to your destination” weather. Unfortunately, this means that those of you with a Bentley Continental GTC, a Ferrari California, or even a Lexus IS C, can’t fully enjoy your drive.

But, today, driving down from LA to Anaheim (yes, to go to the happiest place on Earth), I decided to take the scenic route and drive along Pacific Coast Highway. Along the coast, where the temperature is only in the mid-70’s, I was reminded of the joy derived from occasionally dropping the top on a Sunday afternoon drive. With my sunglasses on, a cool breeze blowing through my hair, and the Beach Boys blasting on the radio (they are a necessity for coastal cruising), I realized that it’s possible that convertible lovers are on to something. Sure, if you’re fond of track days then arguments for getting a hardtop will always win out, but let’s face it, aren’t you more likely to spend your days cruising down the boulevard? You might as well enjoy it while you do...even if it does add an extra 25 miles to your route.

So, we at Luxury Car Report have decided to take a look at the convertibles available today and give you our insight as to which are desirable and which ones fall a little short. Make sure to check back in as we preview the coolest convertibles of 2010 one by one in order to help you decide which luxury drop top to add to your garage.
