August has come, and has brought with it a slew of "back to school" events, sales and chronic depression. Amongst the chaos of buying new clothes, pencils and dorm room furnishings, it is important to remember the car needs some preparation as well.

The Car Care Council recommends you check the following items before heading off to higher education:

- Tires and tire pressure
- Hoses and belts
- Air filters
- Wipers
- Exterior and interior lighting
- Fluid levels, including engine oil, power steering, brake, transmission, windshield washer solvent and antifreeze/coolant

Best of all, these are all very simple checks that require very little tools or mechanical knowledge to perform.

The council also recommends what they call a "21st century tune-up" as explained in this video.

Remember, your life is in your car's hands when you're out on the highway. Always make sure it is as safe as possible!
