Without the magic of the stereo system in a car, being the passenger during a road trip can be a pretty boring. It can be even worse than boring if your trip takes you through the Midwest. Thankfully, with today's cars having CD players, Mp3 players, iPod integration and all sorts of other technology, the driver can provide plenty of tunes for them and the passengers to sing along to as the miles melt away. However, choosing the right songs can be quite an ordeal. No one wants to listen to Rascal Flatt's "Life is a Highway" on repeat for six hours, so here is a list of songs that have a wide enough appeal to satisfy any passenger on a long drive, and can make part of the adventure the journey itself.
10. David Bowie - Space Oddity
What better song to be pulling out of your driveway for the last time in a while than one that counts down to blast off? This song is all about a journey... through space. Driving to it can make you feel like you really are Major Tom.
9. The Beatles - With a Little Help From My Friends
What is a road trip without a group of friends along for the journey? This happy tune will remind everyone why they got into the tiny metal box on wheels in the first place, and guarantees a bit of sentimentality... unless you're traveling alone. Then, it might guarantee a bit of loneliness. Not a big fan of The Beatles? Try the version by Joe Cocker instead to change it up a bit.
8. Kansas - Carry On Wayward Son
If your friends play Guitar Hero, it is likely they will start singing along to this song. Hopefully they don't have the Guitar Hero finger patterns memorized, because those don't really translate to air guitar.
7. Bruce Springsteen - Born To Run
What would a musical countdown be without The Boss in the list? Born to run has the perfect tempo and musicality for staring at landscape fly by, and the line "baby we were born to run" makes the journey feel like a grand escape.
6. War - Low Rider
Who cares if you are road trippin' in a Toyota Camry, when this song comes on everyone feels like they are riding in the baddest machine on the street.
5. Old Crow Medicine Show - Wagon Wheel
It might make everyone miss their girlfriends, but the simple tune and happy melodies make for a great sing-along. 4. Snoop Dogg - Gin and Juice
Probably one of the most well-known hip-hop anthems of all time. You have to mix it up with a little Snoop to keep everyone entertained, and this is just the track to do it with.
3. Journey - Don't Stop Believing
So bad it's good. Plus, everyone knows the chorus.
2. Elton John - Rocket Man
When it comes to songs about travelers, "Rocket Man" soars above all the rest.
1. Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody
Wayne and Garth showed us all how to do it, and now this song has earned its place as the all time greatest road trip song. Ever. It is so good, in fact, that you don't even need to play it on a stereo. I have had several instances where a bus full of people were able to do the entire song a capella. No song can top that.
