Nobody could have predicted how well the Lancia Stratos would have done in rally racing. The car was designed from the start to win rallies and it did, taking home the World Rally Championship in 1974, 1975, and 1976. But what made a great rally car didn’t make for a good road car. Cars would sit unsold in Lancia dealerships into the ‘80s even after their production stopped well before.
In 2005, a prototype called the Fenomenon Stratos was shown at the Geneva Motor Show. The concept behind reintroducing the Stratos was a good one—a supercar that was offroad capable for people in emerging countries with a poor road network. Despite the praise of many Lancia fans, not much has been heard about the car since then.
Today on Italiaspeed.com, there were two spy photos posted of an uncovered sports car which could only be described as a Stratos, The photographs were supposedly taken at Fiat's Balocco test track on June 21st. The design is very true to the original production car, but like Ford’s GT supercar, has been updated for more modern tastes and technologies.
The Stratos is more than likely a concept car, but might very well make it into production. Lancia has been criticized for offering what are viewed as rebadged Fiats with questionable styling. By raiding the Fiat Parts bin for an engine like those found in Alfa Romeos, this could be a halo car that the brand desperately needs. However, Lancia fans shouldn’t expect the car to reach production; the Fulvia Coupe Concept has been green-lit several times since debuting in 2003 yet hasn't been built.
