It has been a while since we last heard of the Toyota FT-86, the more affordable sports car to come out of the Japanese company since it axed the Celica and MR2 Spyder. But now website 7tune had an interview with two people in charge of the project: Dr. Shigeyuki Hori who is the Project General Manager and Kazuo Okino Group manager of the Sports Vehicle Management division.
The best news is that the production car will not take until 2013, but it can be expected in November of next year. The car is at 50% of the testing stage at this point and shouldn’t take much longer. The car’s Japanese price will start around $29,000. While some body parts will be toned down and made less expensive compared to the show car, the FT-86 Production car will keep the same silhouette.
As for the rumors of the hybrid FT-86 floating around the automotive world—consider them dead. Both Hori and Okino have dismissed the idea that the FT-86 was going to come with batteries and an electric motor.
7tune also pointed out that the high-performance turbocharged G Sport concept shown at this year’s Tokyo Motor Show will probably not make it to production with a turbocharger. Instead the car will focus more on non-power modifications such as brakes, suspension and body modifications.
