Mercedes-Benz A-Class Could Get AMG Treatment

Elsewhere in the world, Mercedes-Benz sells smaller car that the C-Class that we get here. The A-Class deviates from the formula by ditching the rear wheel drive and offering a small, FWD five-door car reminiscent of their prewar economy cars.

For 2011 the car will be getting a facelift, and along with that Autocar is reporting that AMG will be massaging it for the European hot-hatch market.

According to the article the car will be getting a supercharged engine, and unlike most hot hatches besides Volkswagen’s R32, all-wheel-drive. The engine has already been developed and uses multi-cycle direct injection and is expected to produce 270 horsepower and 280lb ft of torque..

The Supercharger in question is a trick bit of technology. The device is developed by Hyprex with what is called wave-pulse technology: exhaust pulses are used to pressurize the intake air within cells of the supercharger, which is connected via a pulley only for timing purposes and not for compression. This uses a supercharger’s advantage of less lag and the turbocharger’s advantage of using the wasted energy of the exhaust. You can find the company’s diagram here.

The car will forgo a manual in favor of a dual-clutch transmission and the all-wheel-drive system will be rear-biased.

The two-door will not make it to our shores, but the four-door coupe supposedly will. It is unknown whether the AMG will come here as well, but lacking other hot cars like the S3 could mean that it won’t.
