With BMW planning a new high-performance M variant of its 1-Series Coupe, Mercedes-Benz and its own AMG division are reportedly planning new hotted-up versions of the entry-level A- and B-Class models.

AMG’s former boss, Volker Mornhinweg, has previously revealed that that the Mercedes go-fast division is working on a high-performance version of the next-generation B-Class, and now the guys at Autocar are reporting that there will be a new A-Class AMG as well.

The information was revealed to the UK mag by AMG’s newly installed boss, Ola Källenius, who explained that the car will receive a four-cylinder engine with forced induction and direct injection technologies. While many rivals opt for a relatively simple turbocharger design for their force-fed engines, AMG is going with a new wave-pulse supercharger developed in partnership with Swiss company Hyprex. Peak output should be somewhere around the 270 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque marque. Drive will be sent to all four wheels via a dual clutch gearbox and multi-plate clutch all-wheel drive system with rear biased torque distribution.

Mercedes’ next-generation A-Class, previewed here in this rendering, is expected to adopt a more conventional hatchback design and a sporty AMG version will be an ideal competitor for the likes of the Ford Focus RS and Volkswagen Golf R, and of course, the BMW 1-Series M car.

Basic versions of the new 2012 Mercedes-Benz A-Class could be revealed as early as next year’s Geneva Motor Show, with the AMG variant due about a year after that. Sadly, the chances of the new A-Class, and its AMG variant, making it to the U.S. are slim but at least we’re likely to see the new B-Class in local showrooms.
