Top Gear gets all the glory, but is only really an entertainment show. Fifth Gear on the other hand seems to focus on providing its viewers with consumer information. That isn’t to say that the program doesn’t indulge in a supercar or two—case in point this video featuring Tiff Needell, David Coulthard, the Isle of Man, and the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG.

The company was filming a 3D movie about the car and used Coulthard, a veteran Benz driver, to pilot the car. They closed off a road on the Isle of Man, where there are no speed limits, in order to show off the moves the coupe could perform and to keep it safe.

Needell, a veteran racecar driver himself, was there as well and got hold of a spare SLS AMG to flog a bit for one run. His goal was to beat Coultard’s 160 mph speed he reached during filming.

His first impression was that the car had a more jarring ride than a Mercedes Benz normally would (perhaps showing its Viper DNA.)  The engine would bog a bit when the rev-limiter kicked in, requiring quick shifts from the driver in order to keep the speed up.  However, once Needell got the hang of it, he easily matched the speeds of Coulthard, and managed to brake quickly despite not having carbon ceramic brakes equipped on his car.

Both drivers are a bit disappointed that the car would only come alive at higher speeds, but when going at full-tilt, the car is indeed impressive.

  1. Great post, the SLS is flawless. Just read that Mercedes are offering a chance for someone to get behind the wheel and drive one at Hockenheim http://www.facebook.com/mercedesbenzsls i want to win!
