Even with the arrival of the Bugatti Veyron, the McLaren F1 considered by some to be the best supercar of all time. Where the Veyron is practical and luxurious to drive, the F1 is a racecar that can be driven on the streets and comes with some niceties.

Autocar is reporting that McLaren despite needing to work on the marketing for their slightly mundane McLaren MP4-12C, they are in fact working on a “hypercar” that will be a spiritual successor to the F1. The work is being handled rather quickly according to the source, and the car may make record time to reach production

The car will have a carbon fiber monocoque chassis like the MP4-12C. Weight saving, not power, is the main focus on the engineering team right now and Autocar is reporting that the measures being developed will revolutionary. The car is also expected to have a low-emission powertrain.

Despite the good news, there are too many uncertainties of the car to get a good idea of what the car will be like, such as styling or the F1’s innovative center-driving position.

The car will cost more than the MP4-12C, but unlike the F1, will be a regular production car. Another McLaren sports car, to be slotted underneath the MP4-12C, is also being planned.
