The BlueSport concept was in pre-production limbo as the infighting between the other two companies in the Volkswagen Group, Audi and Porsche. Audi was having a hard time selling their sports cars, and Porsche really didn’t want a cheaper, more capable car. So without platform sharing, the mid-engine roadster was almost doomed.

Now Auto Express is reporting that the BlueSport is reporting that the car’s production designs are going through approval before test mules will be built.

Like most production ready concepts, the car hasn’t changed much from the car that debuted at the Detroit Auto Show last year with the most notable exception of Audi-like LED daytime running lights. The car will actually sport smaller dimensions than the current Golf while just as wide, which should give the car some serious go-kart handling characteristics. Total weight should give it an MX-5 fighitng 2600 pounds.

According to Auto Express, the car’s engine choices will be the 2.0L TDI turbo-diesel inline four, the 2.0T from the GTi and GLi, and the not-for-America TSFI 1.4L twincharged four. All engine choices will come with a six-speed manual or Volkswagen’s amazing DSG semi-automatic. The TDI version should get to sixty in around 6-7 seconds while delivering great fuel economy.

The production car should come out around 2013, with a price of £20,000 pounds. For comparison a base GTI is £24,000 compared to $23,664 here in the U.S.
