Abarth was making its own cars back in its heyday while it tuned production Fiats, Simcas and Porsches. Most of these special cars did include the manufacturer’s name that they scavenged parts from, the bodies were unique to Abarth.
Autocar is reporting that Abarth, now owned by Fiat, is planning on releasing a special sports car exclusively for itself. While rumors stated that the car would be built with help from Lotus, Abarth’s head of sales and marketing Antonino Labate has said otherwise. The brand is going so strong since its relaunch in 2008 that the sports car will be developed completely in house and released to the public by 2014.
The British website predicts that this halo car will come with a curb weight under 2000 pounds, be mid-engine, and make 240 horsepower.
Abarth currently tunes multiple variations of two Fiat models, the Grande Punto and 500. Both cars are said to be coming over to the United States thanks to Chrysler’s restructuring and partnership with Fiat. The first 500s to be sold are predicted to be the more powerful Abarth editions due to competing brand MINI’s already established market.
Any possibility of the Abarth sports car coming to America is slim to none until there is concrete word on what exactly the sports car will be or if Fiat will get a firm hold in our market.
