Supercar of the Week: Ferrari 599 GTO

2010 Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano

I hate to admit it, but I have never been a huge fan of the Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano. I think it is too conservative for a Ferrari. Okay, so maybe conservative isn't the best word for a car with a 612-horsepower 6.0-liter V-12 engine. However, if it were parked next to a Lamborghini Murcielago LP640 I would place my money on the Lambo commanding more attention.

Well, someone at Maranello must have thought the same. Look at what they came up with:

Conservative? Not anymore. The black roof and more aggressive front fascia help out in the looks department, but they are nothing compared to what Ferrari did with the engine. I am going to go out on a limb and say the 599 GTO may produce the best engine note I have ever heard (on the internet).

What I love most about this car is that it came from Ferrari. It has been a while since they made a car that is so brutal. Plus, the last time they used the infamous GTO name was in the eighties with the 288 GTO. What came after that? The F40, which is possibly the greatest Ferrari of them all. Does this mean Ferrari is going to pull out all the stops on their next hypercar? The 599 GTO is a good sign that what is coming will be like nothing else on the road.

You know what else makes Ferrari so great? Those guys know everyone is dreaming of their latest creation, and they were nice enough to put the 599 GTO on their online car configurator even though all 599 examples have been sold.

Go ahead, dare to dream (and waste some time).
