Following the coattails of yesterday’s reveal of the Mercedes Benz SLS AMG E-Cell electric vehicle, rumors are spreading around that the Nissan might follow the Germans and make the GT-R run off batteries as well.

During The Motor Report ‘s interview with the GT-R’s chief engineer, Kazutoshi Mizuno, stated that order for the Japanese supercar to remain competitive it will need to change the turbocharged V-6 to something a bit more environmentally-conscious. Whether or not it would be diesel, hybrid or electric wasn’t made clear, though diesel seems to be off the table.

Changing the engine to something like an electric motor should be easy, according to Mizuno, thanks to the rear transaxle. The GT-R could also be turned into a hybrid system by changing the engine dampener with a torus shaped electric motor and thankfully would be a mild.

In the upcoming GT-Rs for 2011 will improve its fuel economy by changing the aerodynamics will be tweaked to improve downforce while reducing drag and dropping some weight.
