The RX-8 is on its way out after some abysmal sales and tightening regulations for fuel economy and emissions are not Wankel engine friendly. The last sports car in the lineup is the very capable MX-5 Roadster. However, ever since the MX-5 came out, people have been asking that the Mazda install the compact engine into the Miata.
Now 7tune is reporting that Best Car Japan has heard rumors that the Wankel power plant will join the amazing chassis of the roadster’s 2012 model year. But what is even more amazing is that the rotary drive train could infact be the “Sky-G Hybrid Rotary Engine.”
The basis of this rumor is the Japanese market’s emphasis on a new segment “sports hybrids.”
Currently the only car in this segment is the Honda CR-Z, but it is selling very well. This is making other companies like Toyota or Mazda rethinking those upcoming sports models should have hybrid drive trains. Unfortunately the CR-Z is sporty in appearance only, having bland vehicle dynamics, so the segment has a very long way until it can earn the “sports hybrid” title.
The chances of the MX-5 getting a rotary are slim to none. Mazda has had 20 years to put the engine in the Miata and haven’t, so don’t hold out hope until a definite “yes” is given.
