Back in the 90s, the GT1 Category had some of the coolest cars racing at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Unlike the prototype categories, GT1 cars shared styling cues from the manufacturers the cars came from. Even some of the cars, like the Mercedes Benz CLK-GTR, Porsche 911 GT1 or the Nissan R390, were purpose built race cars modified to be street legal, though with ridiculous prices and low production numbers.
But if you look at the field now, the GT1 category is filled with production supercars built for road racing, like the Ford GT or the Nissan GT-R. This shift has made the category seem very similar to the more popular GT2, despite the difference in regulations.
Now it’s being report that the new-era GT1 cars will not be categorized as such, and will be combined with the GT2 category to become a two-tiered category. It may seem like a superfluous step, as it is just combining two categories, but drivers in both classes welcome the change.
So this year’s Le Mans race will be the last that will have the GT1 category for now. We hope GT1 will come back similar to the time where the cars were an exciting combination of the GT2 and LMP classes.
