The Morgan Motor Company, legendary coachbuilder extraordinaire, has always built interesting vehicles. With a flair for the “old-fashioned,” people are rarely undecided about their cars. They either love ‘em or hate ‘em. Understand them or don’t. You can’t have an argument about whether or not a Morgan is practical or user-friendly because they’re not. They’re meant to evoke a sense of whimsy and longing for yesteryear and the open road, while still remaining sporty. And that’s either something you want or something you don’t.
However, Morgan doesn’t come out with new cars very often. So, when they announced earlier this year that they plan on releasing a new vehicle every other year, the news created quite a stir. True to their word, Morgan has confirmed that they will debut the new EvaGT, a 2+2 coupe, at the 60th Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in Carmel, California this August.
The car will be the first thoroughly modern Morgan, as it boasts a hand-finished aluminum body, complete with flush door handles, hidden windshield wipers, and sharp creases that are designed to improve aerodynamics and downforce. This represents a departure from the Morgan Aero 8, which has a body substructure made of ash wood.
Additionally, the EvaGT will continue to use a BMW 3.0L straight six twin-turbo with direct injection rated at 306 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque.
The coachbuilder is notorious for making lightweight vehicles, and the EvaGT is expected to be no different with an approximate weight of 2,755 pounds. Add its lightweight design to its 306 horsepower output and you get an estimated 0-60 mph time of 4.5 seconds with a top speed of around 170 mph. Not too shabby considering the new rear-wheel drive coupe should get around 40 mpg and can be ordered with either a six-speed “sport automatic” or a six-speed manual.
And even though we’ll just have to wait until August to see the EvaGT, we can start drooling over the shadowy profile shot that Morgan has released. In the meantime, we’ll be saving up for Pebble Beach, where Morgan will start taking deposits on the first 100 vehicles--though don’t expect your hand-built vehicle to be delivered until mid-2012.
