Shelby Cobra, or AC Cobra for the British, has its share of replicas over the years, making it one of the most copied sports car designs in the world. But now a Japanese company called “Baby Cobra,” has made their own unique mark onto the replica scene.
The Baby Cobra is based off of the Suzuki Cappuccino, a sporty kei-car that was never sold here in the United States. That means instead of the big V-8s found in most other cars, the car is powered by a 660cc turbocharged three-cylinder. That is less than a tenth of the original’s 427 cubic inch engine’s displacement.
The little engine produces about 85 horsepower, which is pretty good considering that the replica weighs less than 1500 pounds. But customers can upgrade their cars to produce 158 horsepower which also comes with larger brakes. Stock suspension gets stiffer springs, but can be upgraded to a fully adjustable race suspension. A limited-slip differential is also an extra cost too.
The car looks like a squished version of the Cobra shape that we know and love, for good reason. The length of the car is fifteen inches shorter lengthwise and six inches shorter than the original, but two-inches wider. The exaggerated hood scoop, normal sized Halibrand-styled wheels and huge dummy exhaust pipes helps add to the cartoonish looks too.
Prices for this little replica start at, according to Auto Express, £27,724 and ending at £43,993. In U.S. dollars that is $39,738 starting out and ending at $63,047, which is the cost of a really nice, V-8-powered, full-size replica that has the licensing agreement to use the Cobra name and badging.
