2012 Land Rover LR2 facelift spy shots
With the financial backing of Indian parent company Tata Motors, Land Rover now has the freedom to expand its lineups with new models that previously would have been too costly. Land Rover is currently working on new hybrid technology as well as a brand new compact model based on its LRX concept, but before their arrival we should be seeing a facelift of the ageing LR2 to see it to the end of its long lifecycle.
Seen here testing in prototype form, the updated LR2 should be arriving towards the end of this year as a 2011 model. Expect to see some minor revisions to the front fascias and lighting, as well as an updated interior.
As early as 2007 there have been reports of Land Rover working on a new seven-seat LR2. At 14.8 feet in length, the current LR2 is slightly shorter than many of its rivals, though its interior is still generous thanks to its relatively long wheelbase. The seven-seat option was expected to arrive with this facelift but it has since been canceled as Land Rover focuses on other models.
The project, codenamed L486, is still important for Land Rover as the company has ambitious plans for the updated vehicle. Once it’s eventually launched, Land Rover hopes to achieve more than 70,000 sales annually for the new 2011 Land Rover LR2.

The LR2 that you refer to in this article is in fact the Freelander 2. A vehicle that is less than four years old. How can this possibly be described as an ageing vehicle?
The Freelander 2 is called the LR2 in America, not to be confused with the Discovery LR2. Then when Land Rover switched to the Discovery LR3, the 2nd gen Freelander became the LR2- quite confusing.
It is an ageing vehicle, as the current one is really just a major facelift to the original Freelander. This means the 2011 model is a facelifted version of a car that's already facelifted.
Still just an expensive Ford Escape (a platform that goes back to the 1990s).

The LR2 (Freelander 2) is a completely new SUV from the old Freelander 1. The LR2 is based on a Volvo platform with a Volvo i6 engine ( Shared with XC60, XC90, S80, Fusion, Taurus X) not the Escape. The Original Freelander(released in Europe in 1996 as a 97 model well before Ford bought Land Rover from BMW) also shared nothing the Escape.
