Mercedes-Benz's next-generation V-6 and V-8 engines
Mercedes-Benz refreshed its engine lineup with two new engines: a 3.5-liter V-6 and a twin-turbocharged 4.7-liter V-8.
The V-6 unit is replacing a similar displacement engine, but power has increased from 272 horsepower to 306 horsepower and so has the torque, going from 258 pound-feet to 273 pound-feet, with the latter available from 3,500 to 5,250 rpm. The angle between the banks has been decreased from 90 degrees to 60 degrees, leading to a significant reduction in vibration. The fuel economy has also been improved, going from 23.5 mpg to 31 mpg. Those numbers are likely EU combined figures, but the automaker didn't specify in the release.
The 4.7-liter twin-turbo V-8 replaces the current 5.5 liter engine with the same configuration. Torque has been significantly increased from 391 pound-feet to 516 pound-feet, available from an impressively low 1,800 rpm. Power, meanwhile, has increased from 382 horsepower to 435 horsepower. Fuel economy has also been boosted, going from 18.5 mpg to 24.7 mpg.
These gains have been made possible thanks to a range of technologies such as turbocharging, direct injection, multiple ignition and the deployment of engine stop-start capability.
