Many in the U.S. have been hoping to receive the wildly popular Fiat 500 minicar for the past couple of years but a lack of interest in small cars has largely held it back. Now, with Fiat's alliance with Chrysler in place the Italian auto giant has a gateway to the lucrative U.S. market and the first model to arrive under the new alliance will be the 500, though it’s launch is still more than six months away.

The 500 will be sold in Chrysler dealerships and it will be the only Fiat-badged model in the U.S. market, but it appears there will be several different variants, possibly up to four. The four models are expected to include the regular hatchback, the 500C convertible, a ‘Giardinetta' wagon, and the high-performance Abarth version.

While the hatchback and 500C are near-certainties for the U.S. market, recent reports claim a four-door model is also headed our way, previewed here in this computer-generated rendering. This four-door model isn’t expected to be launched in Europe until the end of 2011 so any U.S. release won’t be until after that, likely as a 2012 model.

It is described as a compact minivan because of its hatchback rear opening and high roof design, and its footprint is both longer and wider than the regular 500 hatchback on which it’s based.

  1. Oh dear, Fiat really do have no idea about the US market. I live in Australia, a country that loves hatchbacks and small cars, and I think they sell about 30 Fiat 500s per month. So you can imagine how well it's going to do in the US.

    Bad stuff?

  2. Whoo-hoo! This is the last spike I needed to have driven in to Nevada soil before I could buy a 500 and it's been driven. We think, anyway. I will but a Giardinetta 500 as an ICE car or all-electric or more probable, a hybrid. Bring this pup over, Fiatsler!!

  3. This might be my next car, and it is the fact that Chrysler-Fiat have decided to build it as a 4-door that I say this. Don't think that Americans don't want 4-door cars. They do indeed, I am one of millions of Americans that both want and need 4-door rigs to drive.

  4. Chrysler/Fiat is hoping to emulate the success of the Mini (a 2-door) in this country.
However, they are missing the boat. The model has been available for over a year in the EU. There is no need to re-engineer the steering (unlike the UK market). Crash testing can't take 18 months. What on Earth is causing them to drag their feet like this?

  5. This is the most exciting automotive news I've seen in months. Build it Chrysler/Fiat, and I will go to my Elko, NV, dealer and buy one. Probably in red like the one pictured in this article.

  8. Roy, There is such a thing as different safety, emissions and OBD regulations for US and Europe. Also, so that the good Fuel Economy of the F500 can be added to the Chrysler CAFE numbers, the vehicle has to have a certain level of US sourced content. Sad to say but nothing is that simple anymore.
