The Mazda RX-8 has given rotary fans something to cheer on since 2003. The car may not be the fastest or most economical in its price range, but it is fun to drive due to a free-revving 1.3L Wankel engine producing a decent 232 hp, rear wheel drive chassis and 3,000 pound curb weight.

However, fans aren’t a good enough reason to keep the selling the car in the state. People need to buy the sports coupe, but not enough are. Motor Trend is reporting that the car has barely moved 500 RX-8s since the beginning of the year, which is fine for a manufacturer like Porsche, is not good enough for the high volume manufacturer.

Mazda manufactures some of its cars in Hiroshima, Japan that includes the RX-8. It makes more sense to put a more popular car in place of the coupe with the high costs to ship each car, and Mazda is just making the more sensible choice.

This isn’t the only market where Mazda is terminating sales for the RX-8. The car will also no longer be sold in Europe because of not meeting upcoming Euro5 emission standards.

So those out there who have been waiting to buy an RX-8 should do so soon, there won't be a rotary in Mazda's line-up after 2011. But here at the Sports Car Monitor think that they’re really waiting to see the upcoming RX-7.
