Iron Man 2 meets the big screen in May of this year, and along with it comes a showing of the Audi R8 Spyder. Known for its appearance in Transformers 2, the Audi R8 is no new face to the movie industry. Not surprisingly, Audi seems to be focusing its product marketing on this young audience, but is their vehicle really all that it is said to be?
The Audi R8 was developed by a private subsidiary of Audi AG, Quattro GmbH. The vehicle closely resembles the Lamborghini Gallardo, which oddly enough, is in the same family as Audi. Lamborghini is owned by Audi AG, and after traveling up the food chain for a bit, Porsche owns Audi AG. The tightly bound group of sports vehicles are all pioneers in the modern luxury sports car industry.
The R8 Spyder is a soft-top convertible with a 5.2 FSI V10 engine that can hurl 525 horsepower. The lightweight cloth top ensures that the R8 Spyder can perform well at high speeds. The cloth weighs a mere 92 lbs to ensure that the vehicle stays light and has a low center of gravity.
The edgy streamline exterior isn’t the only thing Audi has tucked away in its back pocket. Being a part of a sports car family, the Audi R8 has an incredible engine that can keep up with the best in the industry. The 5.2 FSI, 525 HP engine, can move its lightweight counterpart to 100km/h (62mph) in just 4.1 seconds, and top out at 313 km/h (194 mph).
So whether you envy a car's exterior or its ability to perform well on the open road, the Audi R8 Spyder seems to be a lot of bang for the buck, even if it sells for more than its expected $200k+ with auto insurance rates that aren’t even imaginable.
