In 1996, Porsche released their newest car, the Boxster. Styling was based off of the 1993 concept of the same name, it surprising kept most of the styling intact.
It was the cheapest Porsche in their line-up and was pretty much a sales success. With the mid-engine configuration, it not only provided great handling balance, but also gave the Porsche decent luggage capacity.
In 2000, Porsche released a new version of the Boxster that was given the “S” designation. Instead of the base model’s then new 2.7L flat-six, it came with a 249 hp (255 hp in 2002), 3.2L engine that produced peak torque at 2000 rpm. Transmission choices included a five-speed Tiptronic automatic or an S-only six-speed manual. This helped the roadster propel itself to 5.5 seconds.
Not only was the drive train upgraded, the Boxster S received larger brakes, a stiffer sports-tuned suspension, and larger wheels. Porsche Stability Management became available in 2001. Handling was said to be on par with the more expensive 911, and brakes slowed the car down from 60 mph in 118 feet.
The two trunks provided by the mid-engine layout gave the Boxster 9.1 cubic feet cargo capacity which is quite good for a two-seater. Inside the Boxster shared many components from the 911, though the S’s chrome plastic usage was a huge complaint. The best upgrade came in 2004, however, when all Boxsters came with a glass rear window. Mileage is for the roadster 18 mpg city, 26 mpg highway.
Porsche, like most premium car manufacturers, has a pre-owned car program. Their program examines all cars and does any necessary repairs. Cars sold come with the safety of 6-year/100,000 accumulated mile limited warranty and road-side assistance.
A nice example of a Porsche Boxster S is this triple black 2002 model in Salt Lake City. The car comes with 44,655 miles on the clock and equipped with the Sports Package and six-speed, all for the similar price to a base Mustang.
The Boxster S is one of the cheapest entries into the world of Modern Porsches, and with near 911 performance, a pretty darn good entry at that.
