The MG TF was a car that was never sold in the United States, as MG pulled out of the U.S. market in the early 1980s. The cars were mid-engine roadsters, similar to the last Toyota MR2, but production has pretty much ceased since the global recession occurred. Still, it was good seller in its native England. The company, NAC-MG, feels that the car needs to be refreshed after the general platform has been in production since 2002.
Now British Car Magazine Auto Express is reporting that this all new car is under development and called the X120. The chassis has been stretched longer than the previous tiny 93 inch wheelbase and is a very good handler.
Engine choices are being reported are a V-6, a GM-sourced turbo diesel, and a hybrid system. The hybrid drive is apparently a priority so the car can compete with the sports-hybrid category which is only occupied by the Honda CR-Z. The car should be in production for 2013.
Unfortunately the chances of this car coming to the U.S. are little to none. An indication of this is that NAC-MG wanted to build MGs in the Oklahoma, but the deal fell through. Afterwards marketing director Gary Hayden said that MGs in the American Market.
The Mazda Miata is the only new cheap contender in the affordable roadster segment with the demise of the Honda S2000 and GM’s Solstice and Sky Roadsters. It would be nice to see some healthy competition and MG looks like it has a good opponent with nice engine choices in the queues.
