Towards the end of General Motor’s Ownership of Saab, the brand was being diluted. Gone were the quirky and uniquely styled hatchbacks with torque-steering turbo fours and badge engineered Opels took their place.
Now with Spyker’s ownership of the company, things might become “normal” again. In fact, the CEO of Spyker, Victor Muller, stated during this year’s Geneva Motor Show that he’d like do a retro-modern version of the 9-2. In fact, he’s even sketched out what he’d like it to look like.
Britain’s CAR Magazine has seen these sketches and has created some CGI interpretations of this “MINI rival.” The car keeps the same basic shape as the original, as well as the inboard headlights and low grill placement. The artists have done a good job keeping the car close to the 9-2, yet being entirely different.
However, the publication also says there is no future plans for the car except for the wishes of Muller. In order to create the car, they are looking around for a technical partner to help share development costs by platform sharing like the Ford Ka and Fiat 500.
The best case scenario, according to CAR Magazine, would be a sporty front-wheel-drive hatchback powered by a turbo four that will match Saab’s current lineup. Prices would start higher up than what MINI’s range does. Think Audi’s A3 or upcoming Europe-only A1.
The original Saab 9-2 was a slippery two-door sedan with a two-stroke two-cylinder engine powering the front wheels. It was built between 1949 to 1956 but the same basic layout and body design continued to be built until 1980.
