The 2011 Ford Mustang is the “it” car of right now. Not only has the 5.0 badge return in the form of the 412 hp Coyote V-8, but the 305 hp 3.7L V-6 is being praised as a performance bargain.
According to Edmunds Inside Line’s Joe Oldham, enthusiasts need to look past the performance numbers on paper and look at the real world, where the V-6 seems to struggle with getting the 3500 pound Mustang around.
The biggest issue that Oldham has is that the peak torque that the engine generates is at 4,250 rpm. The car needs to get the snot ringed out of it in order to generate any passing power. If the driver isn’t in the right gear, there’s going to be a lag in any power.
That means that owners will have to drive conservatively in order to get the mileage that Ford is touting: 31 mpg highway for the automatic transmission, 29 for the manual transmission. Driving with anymore gusto and the mileage will drop as Inside Line managed 20.7 mpg combined.
That’s not to say that there is no love for the V-6. It’s faster than most V-6 equipped cars on the road, except the G37 and 370z, and a lot of fun can be had keeping the car revving past 4,000 rpm. Plus equipped with the $1995 Performance Package, the V-6 delivers better slalom times than the GT.
The V-6 Mustang isn’t the wonder car that everybody expected it to be according to Inside Line, but a decent sporty car like the V-6 equipped 2010 Chevrolet Camaro. With a price-as-tested coming in at $30,600, they feel that true enthusiasts would rather spend their money on the base GT.
