The media blackout for the 2011 Ford Mustang is finally over and The Car Connection’s Bengt Halvorson has had the luck to drive both the V-6 and GT.

Bengt is pleasantly surprised with the $23,000 V-6 Mustang’s performance, especially with its rental car stigma the base mustang always gets stuck with. The V-6 provides power and economy, as spirited driving with the manual equipped car brought about a near 23 mpg.

Though it isn’t perfect, especially in automatic form, straight out of the gate, he calls it calls the V-6 “…surprisingly, one of the best bang-for-the-buck performance coupes.”

Bengt also loves the $30,000 GT, feeling that it has the thrust and sound of a supercar. At one point he feels that the power generated by the 5.0L TI-VCT V-8 provides nearly as much performance as the GT500. He didn’t feel much of a difference in handling between the GT or the V-6, as the V-6 was equipped with the Performance Package which added the GT suspension goodies.

Bengt concludes, “The new 2011 Mustang GT is wildly fast and wildly fun, and Ford likely opened up the gate for an entirely new performance legend.”

Check out Bengt’s reviews for the V-6 and GT for where both Mustangs didn’t do so well or how it did on the track compared to the 2010 Camaro.

  1. It’s good to hear how well it performs. The 4.0L V6 it replaced was way overdue for an update. Surprising the turbo version isn’t available, especially in a Mustang.Impressive. This could be my next car.

    Bad stuff?

  2. I first drove the Camero's (V-6 and V-8). I like them but thought the interior was really cheezy and visability was bad for someone 6'1" tall let alone shorter people. I then drove the Mustangs. No comparison...hands down superior in every way except the leather seats (or so I thought). Then I ordered mine with brick red interior, Black rag-top cloth on Black and what a huge improvement over the camero which I do still like externally. The Mustang is simply a much more modern technology under the hood and performs way better at the wheel wells.
